The Nerd
By Larry Shue
Directed by Greg Z. Newcomb

One of the funniest plays ever written, an inventive, side-splitting comedy. The hilarious dilemma of a young architect who is visited by a man he has never met but who saved his life in Vietnam. The visitor turns out to be an incredibly inept and hopelessly dim “nerd” who outstays his welcome with a vengeance. His presence leads to one uproarious incident after another that could bring disaster.

Auditions: Monday, July 21st and Tuesday, July 22nd at 7 p.m. Callbacks on Tuesday the 22nd at 8 pm.

Rehearsals will be Mondays through Wednesdays at 7 p.m. starting July 28.

All roles are open - actors will be cold-reading from the script. There is no pay.

This is a highly physical slapstick comedy. All roles require jumping, dancing, running, and screaming.

Willum – Male, mid 30s. The typical “nice guy” – polite to a fault, mousy, and his assertiveness quietly moved away in 1976. Mild-mannered Midwesterner architect in a career and personal relationship quagmire.
Tansy – Female, late 20s-early 30s. Bright and pretty girl who finally has a chance to leave small town Terre Haute for the big city weathergirl job. Not LA/NY glam, but natural, wholesome charm with a hint of educated sarcasm.
Axel – Male, late 30s-early 40s. Quick-witted, sarcastic theater critic whose sharp tongue and one-liners keep everyone on their toes. A self-described “bastard” who has a shred of decency deep down hidden in a mixture of Jack Daniels and cynicism.
Waldgrave – Male, 40ish-50ish. Loud, overbearing, and callous hotel owner. Hasn’t smiled in decades and the last time he did it was gas. Truly believes that everything can be solved if you scream at it loud enough.
Clelia – Female, late 30s-mid 40s. Waldgrave’s wife and a the polar opposite. A teacher by trade who has a hard time extracting herself from the classroom and tends to speak slowly and concisely to adults – especially her loudmouth husband. Despite quiet demeanor has a mean streak for destroying helpless dinnerware.
Thor – Male/Female, 10-15ish. The Waldgrave’s youngest child – simply a demon in human form. Thor’s cameos in the first act consist mostly of screaming, mischief making, talking back, hiding in locked rooms, more screaming and fainting. A small but fun, memorable role.
Rick – Male, mid to late 30s. The titular “Nerd,” Rick is the living embodiment of the nerd stereotype: bespectacled, awkward, weird phobias, annoying habits and a snorting laugh that haunts you. Rick is a chalk inspector, tambourine enthusiast and perhaps just a little bit more. The role requires a strong character actor who can do several voices including British and Foghorn Leghorn exaggerated Southerner.
